Why Do We Need to Recycle Fluorescent Bulbs?

Recycling prevents the release of mercury into the environment, which is classified as a “Hazardous Waste” under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Each lamp contains mercury which can be harmful to both humans and wildlife. Due to mercury concerns, recycling fluorescent bulbs is highly recommended by the Hawaii Dept. of Health and Environmental Management and requires many facilities throughout the state.

Bulbs cannot be simply thrown out in the dumpster or treated as municipal waste, as they can break down and release their toxic contents when discarded in these ways. All mercury-containing light bulbs should be disposed of regularly and legally to avoid the effects of mercury emissions on the environment.

EMCC offers Lamp & Ballast Recycling Services. Types of lamps recycled include but are not limited to:

  • Straight Fluorescent (all lengths and diameters)

  • Compact Fluorescent (both with and without ballast)

  • Circular, U-bend, UV Lamps (all sizes)

  • Flood Lamps

  • Halogen

  • HID (High-Pressure Sodium, Metal Halide, Biax, High Intensity, Bi-Metal)

  • Shattershield or Coated Lamps

  • PCB (Magnetic) and non-PCB (Electronic or Magnetic) ballast
